Dear Friend
When I was in sixth grade, I experienced my first kiss. Richard sat diagonally opposite me in my quad seating group. He seemed annoyed with me, even kicked me lightly once underneath the desks, so no one knew what was happening, including me. We fought, but I never understood why.
Then, one afternoon after school, he showed up at my house when no one else was around. We talked for a few minutes. With no warning, he leaned over and kissed me, lingering with his lips. I was just adjusting to what was happening, in shock. And then he left, riding off on his bicycle. It was not a cinematic moment with him riding off into the sunset, but it left me stunned.
I think I finally figured out why he kissed me. He left school, and I learned that his family had moved away. He never contacted me again. As this was well before the internet put everyone in easy reach, I had no way of finding him.
Other firsts in my life have been equally baffling, like the first time I heard someone talking to himself while walking along on a sidewalk. He was carrying on a conversation, but I thought he’d asked me a question, so I answered him. He looked at me in surprise, and then I saw the-what I later learned was-an earbud. It was the precursor of many overheard conversations in public. Why are people so willing to share their private lives in public?
My character, Louisa, has a lot in common with me, but we are definitely different. When Louisa first met Will, she despised him because he was rude to her. Then she waited months before she experienced her first kiss with Will. She finally had to ask him why it was taking him so long to kiss her.
And when they finally kissed, they steamed up the car’s windshield. I don’t want to share much more, because that would include spoilers. Sharing spoilers would ruin the fun!
Since Louisa and Will are the protagonists in four of my books so far, I think you’ll understand they are quite compatible. Click here to learn what changed with them, leading to a first kiss, and much more. Read about Louisa and Will in my first book of the series, Louisa’s Passion. (Now a bestselling novel!)
How many firsts do you remember in your life? I hope you remember only the great firsts! Savor them!
I hope your memories are all happy ones!
Happy Reading,
