With Valentine’s Day this week, writing about romancing your valentine is appropriate. As a romance author, I know how it feels to be romanced, which inspires my writing.
A few years ago, my spouse treated me to a dinner that I consider the most elegant, delectable, and atmospheric I’ve ever enjoyed. The restaurant in Portland, Oregon has changed, but my memories are permanent, including the dessert which exceeded any I have ever eaten.
When I remember the dessert, I smile. A carefully constructed, fragile sugar lattice formed an enclosure over, but apart from, the luscious, chocolate cake. Fresh cherries were integrated in the design, with elegant designs on the plate as well, with more cherries.
What a masterpiece! The baker should be in a hall of fame.
Those memories helped me create an elegant dinner that my characters, Louisa and Will, experienced during their honeymoon in a hotel on the California coast.
TO ENHANCE ROMANCE:
First, for an elegant dinner, dress up. Men wearing a sparkling, white shirt, with a dark-colored suit are extremely swoon-worthy. If they are clean-shaven or have a slight scruff, they’ve enhanced the swoon. A carnation in the lapel would add to the look.
The woman, wearing a dress that leaves something to the imagination, will wear simple jewelry and subtle makeup. Light on the fragrance. Hair is up or down, whichever feels more romantic.
In A Vision of Home, Will and Louisa arrive at the hotel’s restaurant “dressed to impress.” The food, service, and atmosphere, with quiet background music, are impeccable.
While they wait for their dinner to be served, Will comments about the house they plan to buy. “I can’t wait to have our own home.”
Louisa says, “Will, wherever you are is my home.”
He took her hand and caressed, then kissed it.
The rest of A Vision of Home is even more romantic, with their return from their “honeymoon cocoon.” As with all romances, Will and Louisa face challenges, but their love is strong.
