DEAR FRIEND,
“Come to your senses!”
People usually say that when they want you to agree with them.
Senses are a large part of our understanding, communication, and connection with the world. The sight, sound, smell, taste, and touch we use to function makes a big difference. We rely on our senses.
When writing romance, incorporating the senses is essential. I love using imagery to make the sensual stronger. If you’re reading a bedroom scene, you want to visualize what’s happening. But sight alone won’t give you the full sense of what’s happening, although relying on sight is a mainstay for most people.
What if you’re blindfolded? You rely on touch, sound, taste, and smell, if they’re available.
In my new book (in final edit, as of this blog), The Greatest Thing, a giant bouquet is sent to Louisa and Will as a gift. In
addition to the visuals of gorgeous flowers and a caring note that accompanies the bouquet, they also revel in the cookies that are part of the package-the taste, plus the scent and the velvety touch of the flowers. To complete the sensual imagery, they also hear from the person who sent the bouquet. His wishes bring an audio/hearing treat that is caring and empathetic (feeling.)
As a writer, I strive to create scenes that provide richness, evoke emotions, and offer memorable settings with actions that stay with you. Almost a cinematic experience.
Recently, I received Michelle N’s reaction to reading Louisa’s Passion.
“What impressed me most is how the novel blends the lure of the vineyard setting with richly developed characters. Louisa’s intelligence, focus, and vulnerability create a protagonist readers root for, while Will’s enigmatic charm and hidden struggles add layers of intrigue and emotional depth. The interplay of attraction, trust, and personal history gives the romance both stakes and authenticity, elevating it beyond a standard love story.”
Thank you, Michelle! Her endorsement shows she “got” what I was aiming for, a rewarding experience that provided characters, settings, actions, and a world that impressed her. And don’t forget the steamy love story, which is what romance is all about!

Meanwhile, enjoy using your senses!
PS Louisa also has another sense, a paranormal ability to see some of the future!

Hugs (touch),
