Dear Friend,

When I was a child, my parents created a ritual of marking each child’s height with a short line and the date on the inside of a door frame. They loved seeing how we’d grown.

Humans seem compelled to measure things, both tangible and intangible.

The measuring continues with grades in school, rankings in competitive sports, square feet in a home, clothing sizes, and even, wedding ring sizes.

What I’m most interested in with my writing is the intangible measure of character. Louisa, Will, their families, and the friends, who are like family, tell my stories. But each character has different values and standards in how they live their lives. Although I know I’m inventing them, I sometimes feel they are more than fictitious people on a page.

For instance, Louisa and Will. When they first meet, Will’s rude. He infuriates Louisa. They get to know each other, spend time together, and learn to care about each other. Watching them grow as people throughout my books has been fascinating to me. I write every word, but sometimes it amazes me how the characters developed from their earliest appearances in the books.

Shelley's Cactus
Shelley grew this cactus from a 12-inch cutting, and now it’s more than 7 feet tall!

Will does that rare thing. He admits he’s been wrong and makes amends, changing and growing into a kind, generous, and caring person who is a perfect mate for Louisa.

What would a character or person do for someone they care about? Almost anything. Will helps Louisa’s friend Sophie, just because he can. He knows how tough her life is and,  unassumingly, offers her options for a better life. Not to curry favor with Louisa, but because he truly cares. That’s growth that’s almost tangible!

I’m tempted to share more instances of characters’ growth, but I don’t want to ruin your pleasure with spoilers. If you haven’t yet, it’s time to join us as readers of the Louisa’s Vineyard Series!
