Dear Friend –
If you can complete the rest of the adage, “Laughter is the best. . . .,” you’ll have a healthier life.
Guessed it? Laughter is the best medicine. I’m sure you’re not surprised, because laughing can make someone feel happy, reduce their blood pressure, and relax.
Years ago, I was traveling to a vacation location and the phrase “French toast sticks” came up in the conversation.
I asked the question- “to what?”
The car full of males replied in unison –“To what?!” and laughed themselves silly.
Never having encountered what I later found out was a food product, mostly consumed at breakfast, I asked again, “What does French toast stick to?” This truly bewildered me.
Finally, someone enlightened me. Yes, it was a breakfast product, French toast in “stick” form to make the food more portable.
For me, the “light bulb” came on when I realized the “sticks” in question were nouns (things), not a verb (action – sticking).
Ah ha!
But my family members laughed at me regularly after that. When I finally saw French toast sticks in the supermarket, I understood.
What has that got to do with laughter, my writing, and life?
Well, everything!
When I joke about something, my husband often looks puzzled. He claims I don’t have a good sense of humor! But I feel the same about things he jokes about. Truce! We each have senses of humor. Just different.
Humor in my books is often situational. Readers have pointed out how they enjoy the humor in my books. So, I do have a sense of humor.
For instance, in Will’s Secret, Book 2 of Louisa’s Vineyard Series, Will dresses up with a cape and calls on Louisa’s family, stealing her away the night before their wedding. He affects a British accent and comes in a cape to “abscond” with his bride-to-be, with the agreement of all present. He says to Louisa, “I have come for your hand, my lady. Wouldst thou care to go for a spin in my motorized conveyance?”
To much laughter, she agrees. Will had succeeded in his goal of giving everyone a laugh and breaking Louisa out in a most hilarious way.
So, I say, Yes, my books have humor. In different ways at different times.
