Dear Friend,

What exactly is a friend? Someone you relate to on a deeper level or, as in the Webster’s dictionary definition, “a person you know, like, and trust.”

I recently saw the film, Project Hail Mary. It definitely stretches the definition of “person,” since the secondary lead is not a person in the usual sense. I’m not plugging the movie, but I think it offers us a new way to consider friendships. (I’d rate the film 99 on the tomatometer.)

In my books, Louisa enjoys a long-standing friendship with Sophie. They started in Kindergarten together and continue to be there for each other. They’re so natural together, they can finish each other’s sentences.

The same goes for Will, Louisa’s husband (we’re now up to Book 4 in the Louisa’s Vineyard Series, so this is not a spoiler.) Will has also known Joe since Kindergarten. Joe is probably the only one who could critique Will about his behavior and get Will to listen!

FriendsFriendship is like that. It matters. People pledge loyalty, trust, and dedication to friends. What does that make people feel? Answer: A sense of belonging, a willingness to do something selflessly for someone else, and friendship, which can build a strong bond-for life!

In these busy, harried times in which we live, having a strong friendship makes a difference. It can demand effort, but everything valuable requires commitment.

As an author, I was thrilled to find I’d developed relationships for two best friends who each married other best friends.
