Chapter 1Thank goodness, Kent Rogers thought. If I were alone on this trip, I’d go bonkers waiting to see Talia again. I’m grateful Gia doesn’t mind me “hitchhiking” on her flight to join David in Davis. Sad for her, she’s separated from her new husband all week long.

He looked over at Gia, chatting excitedly with David, waiting for their weekend together to start. In a way, he knew what that felt like, even though Talia and he weren’t married─yet. He could just imagine what being married to her would feel like. He really believed they could head in that direction. If only his firm, Flanagan, Gilbert, and Penn, would move along and approve his request to open another law office in Davis.

Kent, convinced he could create a new office in Davis, knew it would be successful. In just the past three months, he’d landed four new clients, and his work with Will and Louisa was increasing enormously. He was starting a foundation with them, and they wanted him to be the administrator!

Gia hung up from her call with David. “Kent, David said the weather’s cold with freezing rain predicted. Do you have a ride once we land?”

“Yes, Gina. Talia is picking me up. We’re invited to Will and Louisa’s for dinner.”

“So glad! Talia and you are really getting along well, aren’t you?”

“We certainly are! I can’t wait to see her again. After spending three days together after your wedding, we were already finishing each other’s sentences,” Kent sighed.

“Poor Kent, I know how anticipation can be exasperating. I don’t mind you joining me whenever I’m heading to Davis to be with David, but what will you do when he’s coming to Temecula to see me? The logistics don’t work then.”

“I know, Gia, I really appreciate your generosity in letting me share your chartered flights.”

“You were so funny and gracious when you greeted me on that flight during Thanksgiving. Except for Randy, who waited on me hand and foot, I think everyone else might have ignored me. You and Randy made me feel welcome and happy.”

“I’m glad, Gia,” Kent said, “I saw you there alone, and I just wanted to make you smile.”

“Well, you did. And now I look forward to your company when I’m commuting to be with David. Six months feels like forever.”

“Funny you should mention that. I don’t think it’s breaking client confidentiality if I let you know that I’ve been researching your school’s teacher contract. Louisa asked me to find out if you could resign, without problems and penalties, and join David full time.”

“Oh, I’ll have to hug her when I see her! She’s been my secret guardian angel. First, she paid for David’s and my stay at the honeymoon resort. Now, she’s trying to engineer a way for us to be together sooner!”

“I didn’t know that, Gia. I owe her several hugs, too. She invited Talia and me to the Thanksgiving dinner and your wedding. Otherwise, I’d never have met you or gotten together with Talia.

“She’s a pretty special person, for sure. When I met her during Will and her honeymoon, I could see why Will’s in love with her. I asked her if she had a sister or friend, but they said no. Funny thing, though. When Will asked me to help him with his departmental review, I met Talia, but really wasn’t introduced. It took your wedding and the long holiday weekend for Talia and I to get to know each other. It’s changed my life.”

“Tell me about it. I love happy stories!”

“I could gush for hours about Talia, but I cannot believe how well we get along. She’s as eager to see me again as I am to see her. We spent the entire Thanksgiving weekend together, except for my sleeping at Louisa’s and Will’s home.”

Gia laughed gleefully. “I guess they didn’t mind you abandoning them.”

“No, I don’t think they felt abandoned. When I stayed with them during the department hearing, I packed to leave, and found them kissing passionately. They stopped. I believe they are on a very extended honeymoon.”

“Oh, yes! I think you’re right. They are really in love. A great role model for all of us!”

“I’m looking forward to that possibility with Talia. I’m supposed to know after the New Year if my law firm will allow me to open a branch office in Davis. That should make Talia’s and my relationship much easier to develop. But if that doesn’t happen. . .” He looked away with determination, “I’ll figure out something.”

“I’m sure you will, Kent. Let me know if you need any information about my school district. After over 20 years there, I know everyone.”

“I’ll let Louisa know I told you about what I’m hoping to do, so she’s aware of it. She graduated from Temecula High this year. As valedictorian.”

“I thought she looked familiar!”

“Small world, huh?”

“She was never in my class, so I didn’t know her.”

Just then, the flight attendant came over to Gia. “Mrs. Haggerty, the pilot let me know we’ll be landing soon.”

“Great, Sandra. I’ll collect my stuff and be ready.” Turning to Kent, she asked, “Did you need to collect anything, Kent? We’re landing soon.”

“Just my suitcase and jacket. Thanks for letting me hitchhike with you!”

Gia chuckled, looked him over, then said, “So, next week again, my entertaining traveling companion? I’ll be traveling to Davis each weekend until the New Year.”

“Thanks so much for the invitation, Gia! You’re so considerate to tell me, so Talia and I can plan.” He leaned over and hugged her. “What time on Friday?”

“Same time. 6:30 p.m. This Sunday, leaving at 7:30 p.m.”

“Thank you, Gia! You’re my Cupid’s helper.”

“Glad to do that, Kent. Time to belt yourself in for the landing.”

Kent moved to his seat and belted in.

***

Once they landed, Kent helped Gia with her extra bag, hoisted his own, and let her take the stairs first. He glanced around, looking for Talia. Wearing a jacket matching the bright blue of her eyes, Talia waited at the edge of the tarmac, just outside the hangar door.

As he made a beeline toward Talia, he heard David’s voice calling him.

“Kent, I realize you’re as eager to see Talia as I am to kiss my bride. Can you spare me a moment?”

Diverting from his straight line to Talia, Kent said, “Certainly, David. And thank you for letting me join Gia on her charter.

“I’m glad I can offer that courtesy. This way, Gia doesn’t travel alone, and you get to see Talia as quickly as possible.”

“It’s a win-win for everyone. So, David, what can I do for you?”

“As you’re my new lawyer, I’d like to have you set up documents so that Gia shares my life and possessions legally.”

“Happy to do that. Let me text you what documents and details I’ll need to see, and we can accomplish that quickly.”

“Great! If I send over the documents or details you need, can we meet next weekend and sign the papers at my, oops, Gia’s and my home, say Sunday afternoon?”

“That’s perfect. I’ll send you the list in the next day. Has she already changed her name with the state?”

“Yes, we did that when we filed for the marriage license.” He looked over at Gia.

Gia nodded back at him. “More paperwork, honey?”

He nodded and smiled. “Yes, hon. Changing of the guard!”

She kissed him.

Kent said, “To speed things up, David, what times can I call you tomorrow?”

“After 2:00 p.m. Let me put my contact info in your phone, as well as Gia’s.”

“Good.”

Kent handed his phone to David, who filled in the information, then handed Kent’s phone back.

“I’ll send you an official welcome once I get to the office on Monday.”

“Great. I’ve been planning to hire a new attorney. You’ve been very competent in your dealings with Will and Louisa, so I trust you. It’s the perfect time for me to switch. My old attorney retired last year and sent me all the documents he had with me. It’s a stack.”

“Why don’t you gather everything, box it up, and I’ll take it with me next Sunday? I can copy everything and return it the following week.”

“Sure, Kent. Looking forward to getting that pile off my desk for months. Now, go see Talia!”

Kent saluted him with a smile and said, “Yes, sir!” And to Gia, he said with a big smile, “Thank you again for sharing the ride. I look forward to next time. Now, let me get to Talia.”

He took off, waved to both of them, then waved to Talia. The moment he reached her, he swept her up in a hug and kissed her. When they came up for air, David and Gia had already left.

“I’m so glad you made it, Kent! This week has been so long! I couldn’t wait to see you again,” Talia said, looking deeply in his eyes.

“You are even more gorgeous than last week! I’ve really missed you, Talia.”

“How can we work this out? Curious, but what was that about with David?”

“David has legal work for me. I’m his new lawyer! I really need to be in Davis.”

“I agree with you! If we hadn’t already agreed to see Will and Louisa tonight, I’d be driving you back to my place and, well, having my way with you.”

With a giant grin, Kent asked, “And what way is that, sweetheart?”

She fluttered her eyes at him and grabbed his hand. “I think you can guess.”

“So, I’m invited to stay with you and I won’t be sleeping on the couch?”

“We’ll be sharing my queen-size bed. Does that work for you?”

“Definitely. Honestly, I was nervous. We hadn’t discussed sleeping arrangements, and I didn’t want you to be uncomfortable.”

“That’s you, Kent. Concerned about me first. I’m so glad we spoke every night this week. As far as sleeping arrangements, I don’t expect to be doing much sleeping tonight.” She gave him an enticing smile with her eyebrows raised.

“Oh, Talia, I can’t wait to not sleep tonight! During Thanksgiving weekend, I didn’t think we’d be sharing a bed soon. You are worth waiting for! I even stocked up on condoms.”

Talia laughed, “You, Kent, are worth waiting for, but I’m not waiting any longer. When you came to Will’s departmental hearing, I couldn’t help looking at you! When Louisa asked me if I wanted to join everyone for Thanksgiving and the wedding, I knew something special was happening.”

“Talia, you’re the special something. I never dreamed we’d be an ‘us,’ since that’s never happened to me before. I’ve never felt as comfortable with anyone before in my life! And you make me laugh!”

“There’s that. Only one more ‘test.’ Since you’re prepared, and so am I, since I’m on the pill, we’ll see how things go.”

“Should I be nervous?”

She gave him her enticing smile again, puckered her lips, and said, “I don’t think so!”

Once they reached her car and he’d stowed his luggage and gifts in her trunk, he took her hand and ushered her to the back seat of her car.

“Is this okay, honey?”

“A fast make-out session before we head to Will and Louisa’s? I’m happy to join you.”

“Talia, we can consider that the appetizer. I don’t want us arrested for. . . anything.”

She laughed, “But I know you’d get us off for ‘bad behavior.’”

“Nothing we do together could ever be bad. I will wait for tonight, eagerly. . .”

Chapter 2

Will passed the serving bowl to Talia.

“What’s our culinary delight tonight, Will? I know you prepared most of the wedding feast,” Talia asked.

“How’d you know?” Will asked.

Because you were running into the kitchen and everyone was deferring to you,” she said.

“Good inference, Talia. No one else seemed to notice, but since Louisa, Sophie, Joe, John, Karin, Randy, and my parents all knew I was cooking, that was most of the guests.”

“How do you have so many talents, Will?”

“Can we change the subject, Talia?”

“Just answer that one question, please? Most men I know don’t like to cook,” she said.

“That may be true, but Will’s family owns a restaurant at the family vineyard, and Will learned everything there is to know about the vineyard and the restaurant,” Louisa answered.

“Aha! That explains it.”

“If you’d asked me, I could have told you. Will and I have been friends for years, honey,” Kent said.

“What do you really want to do for work, Will? I mean, Kent is a lawyer, and he’s fantastic at it. I can tell he enjoys it,” Talia said.

“Talia, I do lots of things. I’m working as a TA because David didn’t have funds for a research position, which I would have preferred. Part-time, I help out at Watson Valley Vineyards and Winery. Recently, I redesigned the gift shop and visitor’s center at the Winery, which I enjoyed. I’m invested in a partnership with cacao farmers in Belize, where I rent equipment at cost to the farmers so they can afford to use the newest technology to improve their yields. Also, I’m designing quality bedding and getting it produced soon. Plus, my favorite activity is my marriage with Louisa,” he said, looking at Louisa and smiling.

“Will is also modest. He’s an incredibly talented artist. See the paintings on our walls? He painted all of themꟷsince we moved in this past August,” Louisa added.

“Wow! I feel like a slacker. I work at one job and do some volunteer work.”

“Talia, you are not a slacker! With forty-plus hours in your job, plus volunteering, that’s a pretty full week,” Kent said.

“I’ve got to up my game. I actually want to use my degree to become a counselor/consultant. I’ll need to get advanced degrees in Cognitive Science,” Talia said.

“Why are you working for the Enology and Viticulture Department at Davis, Talia? We appreciate how competent you are, but you sort of seem like you’re in the wrong department,” Louisa asked.

“It might seem that way, but I’m learning a lot about organizations, how individuals work in one, and how all those individual mindsets work together. It’s like an internship in interpersonal dynamics. Fascinating, really!” Talia said.

“I didn’t know that about you, honey.”

“You didn’t ask the right question, Kent. I’m versatile. And my family isn’t wealthy, so I’ve earned money in several ways. I’ll tell you about it, another time.”

“As long as you didn’t do anything illegal. I’m impressed,” Kent said. “By the way, honey, you haven’t passed the serving bowl. Please take some of the dinner and pass it to Louisa, ladies first, you know.”

“Oh, so sorry, Louisa and Will. Our discussion fascinated me, and I forgot about the food.” She scooped some of the fragrant stew onto her plate and passed the bowl to Louisa.

Will handed around a basket of rolls and a butter dish. He’d reheated the rolls, so they were warm. When Louisa finished serving herself, Will passed the dish to Kent. As Kent served himself, Will asked, “Is the stew hot enough?”

Kent took a bite, and he responded. “It’s still warm, but we should eat it now. The taste is amazing. May I ask what your secret ingredient is?”

“You may ask, and I’ll tell you. It’s wine! One of Watson Valley’s recent vintages. It works well with red meat.”

“Terrific, now your turn to eat. Who cooked tonight? I want to thank whoever it was,” Kent asked.

“Louisa was the chef. I suggested she add the wine and simmer it for a while to add flavor.”

“Great job, Watsons,” Talia said.

They were all quiet for a few minutes while everyone savored their dinner.

After dinner, Louisa served home-baked brownies with vanilla ice cream. Louisa, ever a chocolate-lover, moaned her appreciation for the taste. “Will, I’m so glad you saved some of the cocoa powder for us to use in baking. It is the best!”

Talia and Kent made eye contact, then nodded at each other. “Louisa and Will, we thank you for the delicious dinner. It’s been a long day and we’re going to spend this weekend working out our future. I hope I might join you both here in Davis soon. If my firm doesn’t get excited about our prospects here in Davis, I just might start a firm on my own. I’m feeling optimistic because David asked me to be his lawyer today.”

“That’s wonderful news, Kent,” Will said. He looked at Louisa, communicating with his eyes. She nodded back.

“Kent, Louisa and I have great faith in you. If Flanagan, Gilbert, and Penn isn’t impressed with your efforts, we are. Come talk to us if they don’t respond quickly. We’ll work something out so you can practice here in Davis. Since you’re the expert, please research what that will take, legally, to be here, and to bring all of us with you as your clients.”

Kent walked around the table and hugged Will, then Louisa. “Both of you have given me the best endorsement. Your trust! Thank you! I’ll start researching everything you’ve mentioned. I want your businesses to thrive and I don’t feel like F, G, and P operates with enough speed to ‘seize the moment.’”

“We believe in you, Kent. Let’s make this happen. Maybe you should hold off on mentioning our potential foundation, so if you can’t take current work with you, we don’t hand that to your current firm. I think Rogers and Associates is the better firm to handle our many businesses and concerns.”

“Thank you, Louisa.”

“And please complete your research and find out if Gia can break her contract before the end of the school year. If they’re flying back and forth each weekend, they might decide whether it’d be better to pay the penalty if you can’t negotiate that down or away, instead of paying for the charters each weekend.”

“Good point, Louisa. I understand how stressful it must be for them not to start their marriage and see each other every day.”

“I agree, Kent. Now that we’re married, I couldn’t stand being away from Louisa that much,” Will said.

“We’re going now, Louisa and Will. Thank you for your hospitality. You’ve done so much for both of us,” Talia said, hugging Will and Louisa.

“And thank you for that beautiful bouquet and the silver pineapple you brought us!” Louisa said. “I know pineapples symbolize welcome. And you are–very welcome!”

***

Once Talia and Kent arrived at her apartment, they stowed all of his items in her guest room.

“I’m glad I won’t be sleeping in your guest room, honey. I look forward to calling you ‘Lover.’”

“That’s something I hadn’t thought about. Ah, ‘Lover.’ Let’s get to the other bedroom, so we can be lovers. I’m so excited, I’d like to unbutton you right now!”

He laughed, “Talia, you’re delightfully honest and refreshing! And desirable.” He took her hand and walked her across the hall. Surprising her, he lifted her in his arms and carried her across the threshold.

“What are you doing, honey?”

“Jumping the gun, a bit. I know carrying a bride across a threshold is good luck. I want to make that happen. Would you, will you consider that in the near future?”

Startled, Talia reacted, bug-eyed in shock. When she recovered, she grinned at him. “Are you always so impulsive, honey? I was not expecting this so soon. You really mean getting married soon?”

“Yes, I really mean it. I spent all week fantasizing about us being together. How easy it is to be with you. How sad I am that we’re apart during the week. I’m already dreaming about you every night!”

“I confess: I’ve been dreaming about you at night, too. I can see us together, married. And more than consider, I’m saying ‘Yes” to your future carrying me across all our homes’ thresholds. . . I’ll marry you.”

“Ah, Talia!” He kissed her passionately, then lifted her again and brought her over to the bed. Placing her carefully on the center of the bed, he began unbuttoning her blouse.

“Could I unbutton you, too?”

He removed his shoes and climbed on the bed next to her. Wrapping his arms lovingly around her, he kissed her, a long, loving kiss that felt like it lasted forever.

Finally, breaking the kiss, she said, “Excuse me, honey, I just needed to breathe!”

“Thank you, me, too.”

He sat up and started methodically unbuttoning, unzipping, and removing her outer clothing. When she was in just her bra and bikini underwear, he paused.

“I am in awe. You are gorgeous, breathtaking!” He kissed her breasts above the fabric and licked her until he reached her neck and lips.

“Do I get a turn? You’re still fully dressed.”

He lay down and began unbuttoning his shirt, then reached for her hand and brought it to the next button. “Your turn, honey, just getting it started. I’m eager.”

She sat, then noticed that his shaft was noticeably larger and expanded behind his fly. “I can see that!” Leaning down, she gave her attention to unhooking his waistband, then unzipping his fly. Once that was done, she grabbed his boxer briefs and the pants’ waistband and pulled them both down. “Aha!” She pointed at his full erection, his shaft totally upright, and announced, “I want that!”

“I’ll share.” He finished unbuttoning his shirt and pulled it off. Leaning in as she settled back down on her duvet, he nestled next to her and kissed her. Reaching around to unhook and remove her bra, and with just her bikinis left, he worked them off as he continued to kiss her.

“Let me get a condom, hon.”

“You can pass on that. We’re engaged now. I’m not going anywhere with anyone else.”

“And I pledge the same to you. I’m clean. Love the idea of feeling you completely!”

“Yes! Let’s. Who’s on top?”

“Would you like that?”

“I would.” She pushed him so he was on his back, and climbed on top, adjusting herself so she could fit him in completely. It took a few moments, as his shaft was large and throbbing, and she was ‘way out of practice.’ “I haven’t done this in a long time, but I think we’re ready now.”

“I am so ready!”

Talia moved down his shaft, slowly, as she gripped him with her muscles, building a rhythm as he responded. Quickly, they were together, responding as if in a trance, hotter and hotter. She could feel herself heating, vibrating, and edging toward her orgasm.

Kent lunged upward, deeper and deeper as he reached her G-spot. “Ooh, I’m coming! Oooh! Aaah!”

At that moment, she reached her orgasmic release and spasmed in rhythm as he exploded at the same time. They collapsed together, sweaty, and drained.

After a minute of total numbness and exhaustion, they smiled, a dreamy, loving smile, and embraced.

Kent spoke first. “Talia, let’s get married soon. I have never. . . never been this way ever before. My mind and my body are telling me how right we are together.”

“Yes, my darling Kent. I want you and I think we’re going to be right here for most of this weekend, Lover.”

“I can’t think of a more fantastic place to be. Let’s turn off both our phones, drink some water and come back to bed. We haven’t said it yet. ‘I love you, Talia. Forever.’”

“I love you, Kent. We’re starting our life together as soon as we can. Do you want to have Will officiate and just invite a few people to a park in a couple of weeks?”

“I think that’d be perfect! But what about our families?”

“My family won’t want to come. We haven’t spoken much since I moved away. What about yours?”

“My dad died a few years ago. Mom might come. I’m an only child. Distant cousins, but they’re─distant. On other continents. The only people we really need are Will and Louisa, David and Gia, Joe and Sophie, Will’s parents, my mom, John, Karin, Randy, and maybe my grandmother. She’s in good shape and we have a fun relationship. Anyone else for you?”

“I have a cousin who might come, but they’re not local. I can ask. No official announcements. We’ll call everyone.”

“Fine with me. We save our money for the house we’ll buy and starting my business. Maybe our business?”

“We can talk about that. Maybe I stay with my job until things get worked out. You’ll need to see what it’ll take to remove yourself from F, G, and P. How much notice you need to give and what you can bring with you.”

“I’ll do the background research as soon as I can. I have my laptop with me, and I think I saved my contract with Flanagan, etc. on it. Would you mind if we went to the library this weekend, just for some basics?”

“Not at all, if it gets us together sooner.”

“How about that now? Getting together, I mean. I’m ready!”

“You definitely are, and since we’re still in bed, we’re both ready!

They kissed and, this time, Kent was on top. He was careful to keep most of his weight off her as he pressed down. They reached orgasmic quickly, but clung together, cuddling.

“You’re wonderful. You’re so welcoming. I can’t believe how well we fit together! I don’t think I’ve said, ‘I love you’ again. Lover, I feel like we’ve known each other forever.”

“Not quite,” she giggled. “But we have forever now. I think you’ll keep surprising me. I love you too!

“Remind me to take my pill tomorrow morning. I think you’ll distract me, otherwise. Much as I think we’ll make beautiful babies, I’m not ready yet. I can just imagine what our little boy and girl will look like! They’ll both have brown hair, as we both have brown hair. Their eye color, that’s a toss-up.”

“How so?”

“I understand genetics. We both have non-dominant eye colors, blue and hazel, so they could have either or a varying shade.”

“Any other predictions?”

“That’s enough for now. We should wait just a few years so we’re established, set up, and staying put.”

“Makes sense. I can see us here in Temecula together. When I was here as an undergrad, it seemed like a great community, friendly, and fun.”

“And we already have a community of friends. It feels like home, especially with you coming home to me every night.”

“I can’t wait, honey.” He reached down to caress her, then lay next to her, snuggling her in his arms. They slept.

***

They both woke up at 3:00 a.m. Neither knew why, but they had already tuned into each other’s rhythms. When Talia sat up, Kent turned over, wide awake.

“What’s up, love?”

“I think I heard an animal. Sometimes they get into the garbage.”

“They’re not coming inside, are they?”

“Not likely.” She lay down, snuggling with him again. “Did we need to get up at a particular time?”

“I don’t think so. Rest, honey.”

And they dropped off, back to sleep.

Chapter 3

Talia, wrapped in an apron, whipped up pancakes, started bacon, and already had coffee brewing. She set the table with a red and white checked tablecloth and matching napkins. The bouquet Kent brought for her was in a large vase, artfully arranged.

Kent entered the room, dressed, shaved and showered. “Honey, you didn’t need to! I was going to take you out for breakfast.”

“Now that I’m technically your fiancée, I needed to show off my cooking talent. Plus, we need to conserve funds for everything we’re planning.”

“I love you so much!” He leaned over and kissed her.

Distracted by the kiss, she realized the pancakes and bacon were ready to be turned over.

Flipping the pancakes, Talia moved to the pan where the bacon sizzled.

“How can I help?”

“Hon, find the maple syrup on the top shelf and, in that cabinet over there. . .” she pointed, “find a small pitcher for the syrup. Grab the butter keeper and put them both on the table. That’s all for now.”

He followed her direction and before he knew it, breakfast was ready, with fresh orange juice she squeezed herself.

“Let’s eat!”

“I certainly have the appetite for it. It all smells so good. But not as great as you.”

“Ah, honey, thank you! Let’s eat before it gets cold. Help yourself. I’ll get the coffee.”

Once Talia sat down, their conversation became serious.

“Talia, honey, I owe you a chance to change your mind.”

Why would I want to do that? Seriously, I love you. I’m not imagining it. Are you getting cold feet?”

“Not cold feet. Just worried that things could go wrong. I want you to marry a prosperous lawyer who can give you the world.”

“I think I’ve got the best deal there is. A man who truly loves me, and in every instance, thinks about me first. Stop this downward spiral, Kent,” she said, emphatically.

“I’m so sorry I made it seem like I didn’t want to marry you. I do. . . with every breath I take, I think of you. I ache for you.”

“If you’re aching for me, I can take care of that ache. I have a secret. If you asked me. . . I could share it.”

“What’s the secret?”

“You know I can’t tell you the secret. Otherwise, it’s not a secret. But I can tell you I spoke with Louisa. Did you know that sometimes she can tell what might happen in the future, and what happened in the past?”

“I think I’ve heard a hint of that. Louisa has many talents.”

“Then, think about what I just said. I know you were listening when Louisa was talking with me last week. I’m using my most positive intuition that we’re a good, heck, a terrific bet!”

“Okay. I’ll go with that, Talia. As a lawyer, the only thing I must adhere to is the truth, which informs me how to follow the law. Honestly, I love you and want our life together. How about we add finding you an engagement ring to our ‘To Do List?’”

“I love the idea, but let’s save the money for now. Just with everything you’ve accomplished and seeing you at Will’s departmental hearing makes me know that you’re going to be extremely successful. And especially successful here in Davis.”

“Why do you think that, Talia?”

“I’ll give you the points. One, you’re an excellent lawyer. I’ve seen you in action. You win. I could see how you and Will engineered his defense. Two, you went to school here and you’ve made the decision that you want to come back. It’s home to you. Three, you have the drive to succeed. Before we were an ‘us,’ I could see your professionalism and your desire to find clients. People like you. You care about the people, and the results. And, I love your sense of humor.”

“Thank you, honey. I see you have the makings of a lawyer with your well-reasoned argument. I’m not sure the sense of humor fits, but I’m glad you like that about me.”

“Results. Now let’s go back to bed and play. We can talk on the phone every day, but phone sex is not as wonderful as the real deal with you,” she giggled.

“I really love your mind. This is going to be a fun marriage! Let me help you clean up so it doesn’t hang over, bugging us. I’ll dry.”

Talia moved to the kitchen sink. While she washed the dishes, Kent kissed her every time she gave him an item to dry. It was going to take a while to complete the clean-up, but neither of them minded.

When everything was clean, dried, and put away, Talia took him by the hand and walked him back to their bedroom.

***

In bed, under the covers, Talia and Kent snuggled under her puffy duvet.

“Talia, have you always been so limber? You’re phenomenal! You were in positions I’ve never dreamed of attempting. I don’t have a long list of partners, but I think I’m going to cry when you put me back on the plane tomorrow. And, I can’t remember the last time I cried.”

“Kent, don’t cry! We’ll have plenty of time to be together. We just need to be strategic and careful. I’ll keep my job for now; you work toward transitioning to Davis. I know lots of people who can be helpful, both as friends and neighbors.”

“I agree. Every night when I get back to my tiny apartment, I’ll be working on enhancing my proposal. Then, I’ll also start gathering boxes to pack things I don’t use often. I’m aiming to present my proposal Thursday to the youngest partner. He’s the most accessible. Did you say you have a storage room here?”

“Yes, I do, and I still have plenty of room in it. No hinting necessary.”

“I’m hoping that I’ll have an answer by the middle of January so I can look for an office location in downtown Davis.”

“I know someone who’s leaving her storefront. She has a knitting shop that she’s closing after the holidays.”

“Can we go see it?”

“Sure. Let’s swing by later, before we have dinner out,” Talia said.

“Speaking of seeing places, do you know when your lease ends? We should find a bigger place for us. Since you’ll need a place to study for your future degrees; and I’ll need an office at home so I can handle cases away from the office.”

“So. At least three bedrooms?”

“Yes. And I think my lease ends in May. Gotta check that. I’m pretty sure I can sublet.”

“Lots to think about! I’d like to think about us for a while before we go out.”

“Great idea, hon.” He took her hand and walked her back to her bedroom.

He embraced her, then moved her over to the bed where he pulled her sweater over her head.

“Kent?”

“What hon?”

“I want to start with me on top this time.”

“Whatever you want makes me happy. See?” He pointed to his enlarged shaft pushing out the front of his jeans.

“You certainly have proof of that. Lawyers, proof, huh?”

“Ha, ha! Come here, lover. I want to prove several things to you. Although I may seem calm and patient, I’m excited. I’ll race you to naked! Start now!”

She stripped off her clothes quickly, but as a man, Kent had fewer things to remove. They faced each other. She still had her socks on.

“Here, hon, lie back and let me help.”

She lay on the bed, spread out with her leg in the air so he could reach her sock.

Once he’d gotten her sock off and moved her over, he shifted over to her, then kissed her passionately. She joined enthusiastically.

“Honey?”

“Yes, love.”

“Time for me to climb on top. I’m ready for you.”

He reached down to her core and felt the moisture.

“Ah, yes. You are ready, and I can’t wait!” He lay on his back, his arms ready to embrace her.

She moved on top, edging onto his fully enlarged shaft. Bracing herself on his chest, she slid down, gripping him with her muscles and releasing and repeating as he filled her.

“Ooooh. Feel sooo good!!”

***

After a nap, Talia and Kent were ready to explore. They dressed quickly in jeans, flannel shirts, and warm sweaters.

“Can we see the storefront first, hon? That should help me know sizes, what might work, and costs.”

“Great, we can do that and still head to the Davis Library. As an alum, you should have privileges.”

“That’s correct! I’ve been a loyal alum and even started paying back more on my student loans. I look forward to being here soon.” He paused, looking at her.

“What, hon?” She focused intently on him.

“Just thinking how much I’d rather stay in bed.”

“Yes, but let’s be grown-ups and plan for our future. We can look forward to bedtime.”

“I certainly will. Good focus, sweetheart,” he said. He took her by the hand as he grabbed his attaché with his laptop. “Let’s find me a great place to start my business and some potentials for our new home.”

“I’ll introduce you to Athena, who owns the knitting shop.”

“Why is she closing it?”

“She’s getting married and moving out of town to be with her new husband. They’re marrying over the holidays. She’s closing the shop as of January 1st.”

“A lot of marrying going on around here, isn’t there?”

“Sure is. Let’s look over the shop. I’ll need enough space for a reception area, three offices, a conference room, a break room, and a storage room. Those docs can pile up quickly!”

“I imagine so. Can’t wait!” She grabbed her knitted scarf and hat. Taking him by the hand, she walked him out to her car’s parking spot in the basement garage.

Chapter 4Thank you for bringing your fiancé to meet me, Talia,” Athena Laskaris said. “I’m sad we won’t get to meet for coffee on Saturdays, but you know. . . since I’m getting married. We can talk and text.”

“Certainly, Athena. I’ll be happy to keep in touch. Let’s see what it’ll take to make this into a legal office.”

“Do you know the square footage, Athena?” Kent asked.

“Yes, it’s 2,655 square feet. I’ll give you a tour, but we have a storage room in the back that’s gigantic, a room where we hold classes, 3 offices, a break room with two restrooms, a restroom off the lobby/reception area, and a couple of other areas where we store supplies, other than yarn. We’re wired for up-to-date Wifi, and have daily service with cleaners who empty the trash, clean up, vacuum, dust, and keep the break rooms and bathrooms stocked. Does that answer your major questions?

“Now I understand how you use the space, Athena. If I decide to take the space, I’d like to remodel and reconfigure it for a law office. Would your landlord allow that?”

“I imagine they would allow it. We had to set this up with hundreds of wall-mounted bins for yarn. That certainly required remodeling. How about I show you around?”

“Great!”

Athena toured the office with them, explaining the office and how it functioned. She showed them where the air-conditioning, water, electricity, and heater were located.

“Athena, I’ve been here for classes and I remember some concerns. . .”

“Yes, Talia, you’re talking about the bugs we needed to get rid of, how there are hot and cold spots, and intermittent problems with the plumbing. Right?”

“Yes.”

“My question is, how was your landlord in taking care of major concerns?”

“Kent, they were okay. If you could reach them. They seem to have answering services who relay everything. The bugs, we had to handle that ourselves. I think the landlords are reasonable, but you should decide first if you want this space, then work with the landlords and get it in writing what you and they expect.”

“That makes sense. Here’s the thing. I work for a law firm in La Jolla and I’m in the process of convincing them I should open an office here. I went to school here, I know people, and I want this to be my home, with Talia.”

“I see. So, you’re not ready to make a commitment yet.”

“I’ll know by the first week in January, but I’m hoping sooner. Let me poke around and measure rooms and take photos, so I can see how much we’ll need to do to start up. Do you have any other prospects for subletting the space?”

“A couple people looked, but left quickly.”

“I can appreciate what you do here. Talia’s been very complimentary about your business. I’m going to look around some more, okay?”

“Sure. Just so you know, we have good traffic here. We have regulars who really keep us going, but even though we’re in the black, I’m more excited about marrying and starting my new life elsewhere. My husband is in the area where he grew up, and he has major ties there.”

Kent nodded and walked off to get more details.

“I’m sure everyone will miss you, Athena. I know I will.”

“Sorry, Talia, I hope you know I’m sad about leaving friends. I am, but I’ve known Jackson for five years, and this is the best life for me.”

“I will miss you, and I hope we can stay in touch!”

“Ladies, I’ve got the details I need for now. But would you be willing to share what you’re paying for rent? Then I can come up with a budget for the partners.”

“I don’t know if they’ll keep the same rate when I leave and, they will need to approve you. I would let them know you’re interested, if you want me to.”

“That’s great. I’ll need to do my homework and complete my proposal to open an office here. I’ll let you know how it goes. Will you be clearing out your inventory?

“Yes, Kent, we’ll be holding a sale and trying to sell off our inventory. Talia, if you want anything for your knitting projects, I can offer it at cost for you.”

“That’s very kind of you, Athena. I’ll think about it. I love knitting─you see my hat and scarf, but I’m going to be busy with our marriage and probably moving to a bigger place. I’ll let you know, though. It’s tempting. I’m sure going to miss you.”

“Bigger place, Talia? I haven’t found someone to sublet yet. I’ve got a huge place and it’s wonderful. Four bedrooms! Everything works and a backyard where we grill most of our dinners.”

“Kent, did you hear that? Athena needs to sublet her place. Can we see it, Athena? Maybe tomorrow morning?”

“That sounds great! Athena, is tomorrow around noon okay? I need to see a client around two. And we really need to get going so I can do that research before the library closes.”

“Yes, Kent. Tomorrow at noon works for me. Thanks for looking at my space.” She scribbled her address on an old envelope and handed it to him. “See you tomorrow. Let’s have lunch together. Can you bring something to share? I’m packing and trying to use up things. I have some hot dogs we can grill.”

“Great! I’ll bring some homemade potato salad and some things I’ve baked.”

“Thanks, Talia. See, we will get together!”

“Ladies, I really need to go. I’ve got some research to accomplish.”

“Okay, see both of you tomorrow.”

Talia hugged Athena, then took Kent’s hand and left the store.

***

Talia had left to pick up a few groceries for the weekend and promised to text him when she was ready.

The legal library was as Kent remembered it. He located the volumes he wanted and parked himself in a back corner with a comfortable chair.

As he thumbed through the pages to find what he needed to do to bring his clients with him, he wondered. What would happen if I need to break away? He put a paper in the book to hold his place and closed the book. He pulled out his cell phone and changed the screen so he could see himself. He saw himself, made faces, and stared.

No self-doubts now, he told himself. You didn’t even know Talia when you decided you wanted to move back to Davis and open a law office. With being engaged to her, that just put icing on our cake. I really love her!

Okay, Kent, time to be totally positive. Will and Louisa implied they’d back me, no matter what! I can do this! I know my stuff. I’m just going to review my contract, word by word, so I know what I must do! Talia sees me as a winner─and I will be!

And being a foundation administrator will be so cool!

He stood up, returned the book to its shelf, gathered his laptop and materials, and left the library. Once outside, he texted Talia.

Kent: Hi, honey! I’m ready, for whatever’s next. I’m outside the library. Let me know your ETA.

He saw the dots rotate as she began answering.

Talia: I’ll be there in 5 minutes, love. . .

Kent found waiting for Talia difficult. Now that he knew he’d be leaving tomorrow night, he wanted every minute he could share with her. And, funny thing, he wanted more time with her out of bed, not just in bed. He realized how much he respected her and looked forward to her opinions on everything they were facing.

Talia pulled up and turned off the car. She hopped out and hurried to him, taking some of his bundles.

Leaning over, she kissed him. The kiss lasted for several moments.

I’m a goner now, he thought!

She pulled back. “We should go. It’s cold out here. I have the key with me, if you were wondering.”

“Great! Let’s go somewhere warm and keep each other even warmer!” He kissed her again.

They headed to the car, loaded Kent’s paperwork and laptop, and started back to their apartment.

***

As she drove back to their apartment, Talia looked quickly at Kent as she drove. “Honey, could I look at the proposal you’re preparing?”

“Terrific, I’d love your opinion. Why, did you have a helpful idea?”

“I might. From the perspective of influencing your colleagues to go along with your moving here to open a law office.”

“Really? I’m intrigued. When we get home, I’ll show you what I have so far.”

“Wonderful. I promise to be neutral and examine what you have as if I was reviewing this for a stranger. I want to be objective to make this work.”

“Sure. I’ll even go in your other bedroom, if you want.”

“No, I want you to stay in case I have questions or useful ideas.”

“You’ve got me!”

She gave him an alluring smile and winked. “I certainly do. Now what to do with you next is the question. Guess I’d better attend to business before we get playful again.”

“Aww. . . Okay, I’ll be good,” he said, with a tone of resignation.

“How good and good at what is my question,” she laughed.

“We are definitely going to turn off our phones and be totally playful during our honeymoon, promise?”

“I promise, sweetheart.” She focused on the road and getting home safely.

***

Kent helped Talia carry the bags of food she’d bought and put them away.

“Okay, the suspense is killing me. What did you want to share?”

“Let’s sit down with your materials and I’ll tell you what I know from my college studies. They do seem applicable.”

He gathered his proposal information and brought them to the kitchen table. “This seems like a good place to make decisions. It’s homey and comfortable.”

“And you’ve already proven the point I was about to make.”

“What’s that?” Kent looked puzzled.

“Colors matter. They can change moods and subtly make things work. Did you notice what colors I have in my kitchen?”

Looking around he said, “I see some light, lemony yellows, off white, green plants, and an attractive azure blue.”

“And you said the kitchen felt ‘homey,’ and ‘comfortable.’ That’s intentional. The pale yellow is cheerful, blue is calming, and green is grounding, neutral. White creates a sense of clean and freshness. The green, since it’s in plants, has several messages. The earth, growth, and richness.”

“And how would you suggest I use this?”

“Show them a layout for the proposed office with subtle blues and greens with touches of light sunshiny yellow. Maybe even matching coffee mugs in yellow. You want them to feel how welcoming your office will feel to people who want to engage your services. Wear blue suits, but leave the jacket off when you’re in your office.”

“Okay, I’m liking what I hear, now that I know I was already being-positively-influenced. What else?”

“Numbers. Business people like to feel that they’re savvy and that those they choose to represent them are, too. Your presentation should include predicted client numbers and revenues based on things you know already. Show them the projected and ongoing costs for opening the office in Davis versus La Jolla. I can help you with research. You want to come across as solid with your details, and totally trustworthy. Be totally honest with them.”

“Give me an example, please.”

“For instance, your potential rental of the knitting shop. Athena already cued you that they get good traffic and she’s in the black. That’s not always the case with small businesses. I can help you take the numbers you have and portray them in ways you’ll impress the partners. Since I’m into cognitive science, I can make the numbers and colors work for you!”

“Sounds great. I just realized we have an acquaintance we also met at Gia and David’s wedding. Karin, John’s wife! She knows office furnishings and has access to many resources. We need to take her to lunch and ask her to assist us. Did you notice how welcoming Louisa and Will’s home was? And they just barely moved in. Louisa told me that Karin helped her find key pieces of furniture that ‘pulled the house together.’”

“Now you’ve gotten me excited. We need to talk to Karin. And you know the perfect person to connect us to ask for her help? Louisa, she’s family. She really loves Karin. This could really help us, even if Karin only offers us some suggestions.”

“Kent, what do you consider your biggest concern about the décor?”

“That it won’t look good together, and be comfortable, and still be utilitarian. Things I buy need to last, be comfortable, and make the place look rich, safe, and experienced. If Karin can steer me toward furniture that creates those feelings, I’ll do well.”

“Let’s call Louisa and ask her to connect us with Karin. But, quick! Tell about the office furniture at you firm’s office.”

“It’s uncomfortable and makes me feel like I’m small and lost in it.”

“That’s a good place to begin. Let’s find out what will work!”

“Yay! Your insights are getting me so upbeat. Make the clients feel comfortable and welcome with a great environment.”

“I’ll call Louisa. Go organize your information by numbers, and colors.”

He saluted her. “Aye! Aye! Captain!” He turned and went to organize his information.

Chapter 5

Kent couldn’t believe he was on the phone with Louisa, who was connecting him on a call to Karin! He realized that showed immediate trust, not making him wait for her to call Karin first.

When Louisa greeted Karin, Kent could tell Louisa really respected and loved her. He silently took a deep breath and waited for Louisa to introduce him.

“Karin, let me introduce you to Kent. I know you probably saw him at Gia and David’s wedding, but maybe you didn’t have a chance to talk with him. Kent, you can say hello now.”

“I’m delighted to really meet you, Karin! At the wedding, I didn’t have the opportunity to speak with everyone.”

“Kent, Louisa suggested you had a professional favor to ask. What can I help you with?”

“My fiancée, Talia, whom I met at Thanksgiving, suggested you as the expert I need to speak with. I’m hoping to open a branch office of my law firm in Davis. I need to convince the partners how compelling that is for their interests. Most of my best clients are in Davis and with meeting Talia and the distance between us. . .”

“I get the picture, Kent. You need to ace the pitch to your bosses so they think it was their idea to open an office. And, since you want to speak with me, I guess you’re hoping that showing them a well-designed, functional, and welcoming space will make this new office show how well you can accomplish developing this potential new revenue source.”

“Karin, you’re brilliant! That’s exactly what I need. Talia talked to me about colors, welcoming spaces, and even how I should dress. She’s a cognitive science major and all these things seem to be influential in ways I’ve never realized. Also, I think you hit it exactly on what motivates them. Money. Always money.”

“Yes, I can tell you’re an altruist. You want your clients to look forward to working with you, and also feel at a deep level, how competent and trustworthy you are, and want clients to trust you and your competence.”

“So, Karin, when would be convenient to meet through our internet connections, and discuss this?  I’m free for a Zoom call tomorrow before ten-thirty. Talia and I lucked out with a noon lunch meeting with Talia’s friend, who wants to sublet a retail space and a spacious apartment.”

“Exciting. I can join you for a short Zoom call tomorrow at ten-thirty. I imagine you’d like to see some sample offices with appropriate furnishings?”

“Absolutely. I imagine a staff of about 4 to 6 people to start. A reception area, three private offices, one small assistant’s space, a small legal library, a conference room, a break room, storage rooms, and restrooms. I’m looking at an existing location that’s currently a knitting shop with a classroom space. It’s 2,655 square feet and there’s separate basement storage.”

“Wow. This sounds like this should be an easy job to convince people. You have a terrific handle on what’s needed.”

“Thanks to Talia.”

“I’ll text you questions I have and offer things for you to consider, plus text me back with anything you think is important for me to include. Okay, Kent. Great chatting! Let’s talk tomorrow. And Louisa, if you’re still there?”

“Yes, I am.”

“Thank you for setting up our conversation. I think I can help Kent and it’ll be fun. Possibly finding ways for his new office to expand in the future, too.”

“Thank you, both! I’ll hang up and you can stay on the line. Talk to you tomorrow, Karin. And major thanks!”

“Thanks, Louisa. You’re the best. I’ll be talking to Will and you soon.”

Once Louisa hung up, he paused a moment, putting his thoughts in order. He decided he’d be totally honest with Karin.

He said, “Karin, still there?”

“I wondered if you’d hung up.”

“No, this call happened so fast, I just wanted to collect my thoughts for a moment. I’m definitely still here. May I be completely candid?”

“I’d appreciate that. Knowing what you’re hoping for and how the office should reflect your approach to law is important. What’s your concern?”

“I can tell we’re going to get along great! You’re the most professional, inventive, and approachable designer I’ve ever met.”

“Thank you, Kent. Now, tell me, what do you need?”

“I need the office not to look like we’re just starting out. Also, it shouldn’t look like we’re going bare bones on the essentials, like the chairs, the conference room, our technology . . .I need our set up to look welcoming, inspire confidence, and be efficient. But also, just a tiny bit of luxurious, but not so much that clients think we’re ostentatious.

“Does that sound too contradictory? Or impossible?”

“Kent, I can tell you’ve put a lot of thought into this. If you practice law as well as you just expressed your environment, I think you’ll be building a large and devoted client base.”

“Thank you so much, Karin! You are right on my wavelength. After seeing how you contributed to Will and Louisa’s home─it’s so natural and suits them so well!─I have confidence that you’re the person I need to get my business to a great start!

“Now, the hard part. I have no idea what outfitting everything will cost with all of the furnishings. I can send you photos of how the knitting shop I’m hoping to convert to a law office looks. The ‘before’ image.”

“That’d be very helpful. Send it to me at the number we’re connected on. Give me 2-3 days to do some strategizing, come up with product, and costs, plus the conversion costs. I’ll make some preliminary designs you can show your partners that’ll wow them.”

“Karin, you’re a lifesaver! And don’t forget to include your fees.”

“You’re welcome. I’ll include the friends and family discount. John told me he was considering moving his legal business to you. We’ll hold off until you find out whether you’re with your firm or in your own firm.”

“Karin, you’re. . .  fantastic. I appreciate everything you’ve mentioned. I’ll look forward to working with you and John. Talk soon?”

“I should be able to pull this together for you. I’ll send you prelims on Monday. Let me know any changes then so I can provide the layouts with suggested furniture and furnishings. We want to impress them. Then, I’ll have the polished package to you on Tuesday after work.”

“Perfect timing. I meet the partner on Thursday, so I’ll have two evenings to review and strategize. Let me know any questions. For a soothing color, let’s consider a sky blue. I appreciate you! Can’t wait to see what you come up with. Thank you, Karin!”

“Bye for now, Kent.”

***

After speaking with Karin, Kent felt revved up. As a result, he spoke fast, moved quickly, and worked at, what seemed like warp speed, while he worked on his proposal. Talia stayed busy in the kitchen as he worked in the second bedroom.

When he read the proposal through once more, he brought his laptop out to the kitchen.

“Talia, are you ready to look over my proposal? I’ve got it pretty much how I want it, but I’m open to your suggestions.”

“Yes, let me see it! I want this to be so convincing the partners will immediately see the potential.”

Kent handed her the laptop and watched her face as she began reading. He noticed her intent look, nodding at points, and occasional smiles as she waded through the descriptions, projections, and intentions.

After twenty minutes, she looked up. “Okay, Kent, let’s discuss this.” Her neutral tone of voice came across as business-like.

“What did you think Talia?”

“For the most part, it was a relatable document with good documentation and strong facts. I think a little stronger language and organizing would be beneficial.”

“Show me where you’d do the stronger language and organizing.”

“Gladly.”

Talia pointed out sections where he should leave out words that were tentative and substitute more positive phrases.

“I’d take out any words, like ‘could,’ and ‘should.’ Instead, say things like, ‘based on current conditions’ or ‘projections show that.’” Start strong and say what you expect to happen in the most positive terms without enhancing the truth. Say that the current business traffic has put them in the black, and for the location, would translate to business for ‘us.’ Say ‘us’ to be inclusive and show you’re a team-player.”

“Wow, Talia, you’re totally amazing! I think you’d better get working on that degree so you can start consulting ASAP.”

“Stay on track, Kent. I’m not done yet.”

Contrite, Kent said, “Sorry, I’ll get back to business, but I mean what I said!”

“I understand, Kent. Thank you. We’ll talk about the degree later. Now about organizing. Did you think about a section titled, ‘Environment?’ We’re talking about the physical and mental environment from when new or potential clients walk into the office for the first time. Assuming they’ve read about your office or heard from word-of-mouth about you, they might only have had a short conversation with your receptionist to make the appointment. The welcome should be warm from both the environment and the people.”

“That’s an excellent idea. And the images Karin’s contributing can enhance that section.”

“And what about including a small corner of the reception area for clients’ children? A table with a puzzle or toys small children enjoy could add to the welcome. When you interview for your receptionist, ask them about their experience with children.”

“Tell me more. How should I find out if they’re right for the job?” Kent asked.

“Watch their face when they talk. Are they stressed? Do they perk up at the idea of children? You want someone who’s adaptable, not just a human voice for answering the phone or greeting people in a boring way. Do they have energy in their voice?”

“Good points. But I can include descriptions for the personnel perspective. Formal job descriptions with qualities required to perform the job. I wasn’t including that, but I can see how it would enhance the full picture of how I’d manage the office.”

“Correct. They want to see that you’ve thought of everything. They need to see, despite your relatively young age, that you’ve got the knowledge to manage the office in every perspective. You’ll want to include your firm’s HR Director for processing new hires.”

“Talia, you’ve wowed me! I’ll add these items to my proposal. I’d also better text Karin to include a very child-oriented corner with small furniture. Some of our clients are bound to be people with small children they can’t leave at home for urgent situations.”

“Contact Karin now so she can incorporate that with her plan. Organize everything and review it, then I’ll look it over again. I’ll be making dinner while you’re working. I don’t want to eat out – cost and time we could be playing!”

“Gotcha! I’ll be in the second bedroom if you need me.”

“Of course, I need you! But I’ll wait for that.” She gave him a suggestive smile, then slowly licked her lips as she rose to make dinner.

“Bye for now, love.”

***

While Kent worked on his proposal, Talia decided on a chicken casserole with macaroni and cheese, and broccoli. It could be done before they were ready to eat, but be kept warm. As she prepped the ingredients, she hummed to herself.

Since I’m humming, I can tell how happy I am. Kent respects me, I love making love with him, and I can tell he’s equally in love. She sighed. “Life is good, no, great!”

“What was that, honey?” Kent surprised her, entering the kitchen quietly with his laptop.

“Just remarking how happy I am.”

“I’m equally happy. Could I ask your opinion on the ‘Environment’ section? I just finished the rough draft of the whole proposal. I know once I see Karin’s information I’ll need to tweak things a little, but I’m really excited about this.”

“Just a minute while I get this in the oven.”

Kent grabbed a glass and filled it with filtered water from a pitcher in the fridge. He sat down, waiting expectantly for Talia to join him.

She stirred in the final ingredients, covered the casserole, and placed it in the oven.

“This came together right on time. The oven’s ready and it should be one of my

best concoctions.”

“Looking forward to sharing it with you, love. Now, ready to look at what can determine our future?”

“That sounds so. . . scary.”

“Not scary, just important. I think this will be something they’d never have expected from me. I’m proud of what we’ve developed and I know I can make this happen. If it isn’t a “Yes,” I’ve already explored what I can do to not cut the string entirely.”

“What’s that, hon?”

“Offer to let them handle certain types of litigation. I’ve seen that before with other firms. If long, protracted cases-billable hours-plus, are involved, I’ve seen other firms partner with firms that specialize in that type of litigation. It’s letting money go, but those cases can engulf your life.”

“I applaud your approach, hon.”

“Good. Time to read.”

She removed her apron, grabbed a pad and pen she had on the counter, and sat down.

Kent moved the laptop in front of her.

“By the way, hon. Do you have a flash drive to save the final product for you and a copy for the partner?”

“Not with me, but I can get them.”

Talia focused on the file. She took a few notes, made comments, and added questions. After about twenty minutes, she looked over at Kent.

“I’m ready to talk about this. First, tremendous job, Kent! This should blow them away.”

“You said ‘should.’ Not ‘will’?”

“Caught that, huh? If it blows them away, that’s great. I can’t predict if it will, because I haven’t met them. If they aren’t impressed, I think you should go to ‘Plan B.’”

“And Plan B is?”

“I think you know─Your own firm.”

“Okay, let’s operate under the assumption that they’ll be impressed and agree to this. I can imagine they’ll ask for changes. Some I probably can easily agree to, some I might negotiate a variation. If I’m negotiating, that will prove that I have a spine, have strength, and can handle power.”

“Good point, Attorney Roger of Rogers and Associates.”

“Are you predicting?”

“Just trying out the sound of it. I like it.”

“One step at a time. Next is getting the specs and details from Karin to integrate into my proposal. I can’t wait. After seeing how she helped Will and Louisa design her home décor, I can’t wait to find out how my new offices will look.”

“I’m sure, when you’re done, no one will ever imagine your law offices were ever a knitting shop.”

“True. Is our dinner about ready? I’ve built up a tremendous appetite for food – and lusting you, my love.”

“Maybe I should turn the oven down and let it bake slowly. It can stay warm while we’re getting hot.”

“How warm?”

“Incendiary!”

She turned the oven down and moved the setting to “keep warm.”

***

After some time in bed, they dressed and returned to the kitchen to eat. When they returned to bed, Talia stunned Kent with her energy and staying powers. He couldn’t keep up with her.

“Hon, I need a little recovery time.”

“That’s perfectly reasonable, given male anatomy. I can enjoy myself with you while you’re ‘recovering.’”

“What did you have in mind?”

“I’ll demonstrate.”

“Nothing scary?”

“Never! I won’t be tying you up or otherwise restraining you. Love shouldn’t mean being restrained─except when you need to wait while you’re at work or some other outside event.”

“I agree. Where do you want me, love?”

“Right where you are.

“This sounds wonderful. Anything you need me to do?”

“I’ll let you know. Just relax.”

She caressed each part of him. Then she kissed him, moving randomly to different parts. As she kissed him, his body reacted, jolting in surprise. She noticed his shaft was already recovering, bit by bit.

He reached her hand, then brought it to his cock, which was already expanding. He moaned, a low guttural sound.

“Love, I’m doing the touching. Wait a little. It’ll feel even better.”

He groaned. “Uggh.”

“Don’t worry. I’ve learned all the good spots. Just give me time. Close you eyes and wait for what I touch next.”

“K.” He closed his eyes.

She leaned up to his face and began licking his face, starting with his forehead, working her way down to his neck.

Kent wriggled, tensing up, his shaft enlarging.

“I can see you’re nearly recovered, but I have more to do to make this a memorable, explosive experience.”

“Ooooh. I need you.”

“I’m not going anywhere, sweetheart. Keep your eyes closed and I’ll continue.”

She moved down to his nipples and alternated licking and nipping them.

He moaned, “Oh, Talia. I feel like I’m going to come!”

“If you wish, go right ahead. I can revive you, and I will. I want you to feel every pleasure possible. You’ve never done this before?”

“Never like this. Just short bursts of kissing and not like this. I feel like I’m on fire!”

“Great! I did promise incendiary! I’ll keep moving. Close your eyes so you can focus on my touch.”

“Oh, touch me! Everywhere!”

“I will.”

And in a quick movement, she leaned over and licked his cockhead, lightly around the tip, then further up the shaft.

He jolted, as his shaft expanded and widened. She could see moisture at the tip.

“I want you so much!”

“You are experiencing the ‘so much’ and I’m not finished yet.”

She licked his navel and quickly reached his lips and kissed him passionately, tongue darting inside his mouth to tangle with his tongue.

When she pulled away from his mouth, Kent moaned again. “I’m burning up!”

She doubled over and attached her lips to his cockhead, this time sucking hard, alternating with licking.

He began to buck and thrust, moaning.

Removing her lips from his cock, she climbed on top and slid down his expanded length, gripping with her muscles and releasing in rhythm with his thrusting. Although they seemed to last forever, he thrust, continuing, until he could feel her muscles shaking, in orgasm, and he joined her, exploding. They lay there, still joined, but unmoving.

After a few minutes of peaceful pleasure, he said, “Are you still there, honey?”

“Very much. I’m still feeling my orgasm. We are explosive together! Wow!”

“Yes, wow! Do you want more?”

“I’m still feeling more! We’re still together.”

“Love it. Love you!”

“Kent, will you marry me?”

“I thought we covered that already?”

“Yes, we’re still covered. But I thought you should hear me propose to you. I want you as much as you want me.”

“Then, I agree. I will definitely marry you. As soon as possible!”

“Aw, honey. I never knew I could feel this kind of love. Total, in every bone and cell of my body and mind. And the best part is that it’s not just sex, but I know you respect my mind. I am truly going to cry when you get on that plane tomorrow.”

“Me, too, love. I’m committed to finding a way to be here with you every day. Soon. When Flanagan, Gilbert, and Penn discover I’m the best attorney they’ve ever had, I will lock in my new location in Davis. Then, I’ll need to be here to supervise the renovations, hire the employees, and be with you every night and as many days as possible.”

“And fit in an incredible honeymoon for at least a week,” she added.

“Sounds great. Sign me up, forever.”

“Guess I’d better turn off the oven so the food isn’t petrified. Excuse me for a minute.”

“Not excused. I’ll come with you.”

She walked to the kitchen, a little dreamy, and turned off the oven. Grabbing mitts, she pulled the casserole from the oven and placed it on top of the stove. Removing the lid, she saw the casserole was still edible.

“Wanna eat, sweetheart?”

“I suppose so. Let’s give it a few minutes to cool.”

“I need some water. I’m still hot!”

He felt her wrist. “You really are!”

Chapter 6

Time crawled for Kent since he’d boarded the charter back to Temecula on Sunday night. He spoke with Talia on Monday, then waited for Karin’s designs to arrive on his phone. Every minute without Talia was an agony.

He couldn’t wait to hear Talia’s voice. He called her. And just as she picked up, his phone “dinged,” letting him know that Karin’s proposal had arrived.

“Hi, Kent. Did I hear a noise?”

“I just received the proposal from Karin! I’m going to open it and if we lose the connection, I’ll call you right back.”

“Okay, love.”

He clicked on the text from Karin, read her short note, and downloaded the attachment. When the first page opened, the colors and design thrilled him. He scrolled down the pages and knew he was going to be in Davis soon! Everything she included was spectacular!

He checked, and somehow, he’d managed to keep Talia on the line.

“Talia, I have her proposal! It’s fantastic! I haven’t looked at the whole thing yet, but it’s impressive. I can’t wait to work in that office!”

“Guess you liked it, hon?”

“More than liked. Unless it’s going to be millions to set up the office, I’ve got this! The last details you found for me comparing cost of living in Davis versus La Jolla should clinch everything. At least twenty-five percent less to run the office in Davis.”

“Now, I should get off and let you look at it completely so you can thank her, ask questions, and make final tweaks. I’ll call you before I go to bed.”

“Thanks, love. I’ll get this handled and call you if I’m done soon. Otherwise, until later…”

They hung up and he opened the file on his laptop, where he could examine it more carefully.

He found a meticulously organized and attractive proposal that made him really want it built and set up immediately.

All the details were there and any questions he might have were answered. Picking up his cell phone, he called Karin.

“Hello, Kent. I guess you’ve received the proposal. Any questions?”

“Karin, I’m stunned. I’m in awe of your artistry and capabilities. Every question I had was answered. I can’t wait to have you develop my office now, as you have designed it!”

“But I imagine you’ll need to wait for the firm partners to approve it, correct?”

“I’ll be seeing the youngest partner on Thursday afternoon. After he speaks with me, I’ll call you right away. The one thing I didn’t examine carefully yet is the budget. I saw the final number and it seemed reasonable for everything we discussed.”

“I pride myself on doing things to fit what my clients need and keep a reasonable budget so they can feel good about what we’ve done. Word-of-mouth referrals are my favorite source of new business.”

“That will certainly be true in my case. I saw Will and Louisa’s home when I was their first houseguest. It was fabulous! It was hard to believe that they’d just recently moved in! You’re a genius!”

“Thank you.  By the way, did you see what I set up for the childcare corner?”

“Not yet. Give me a moment and I’ll take a look. Hold on.”

Kent scrolled the proposal and found the Children’s Corner. He was immediately wowed!

“Karin, it’s gorgeous and so perfect! I think children of all ages will love to hang out there! You are a wizard. Truly. I’m grateful. I’m also going to show it to Will and Louisa and let them know that what you’ve created is perfection.”

“You’re making me blush. Let me get off and let you read every page and make sure there are no questions. If it’s still perfect for your needs, go ahead and integrate with what you’ve prepared. I suggest after you read it completely, you sleep on it. Just make sure you have it well together with lots of white space on the page. Don’t cram things together. It’ll benefit by giving anyone reading it a chance to pause and appreciate what you’ve provided.”

“Thank you! I’m about to do exactly what you’ve recommended. Give my regards to John and thank him for sharing you with Talia and me. She’s going to be so jazzed when I share it with her. Did I mention?─We’re engaged!”

“Fast work, my friend. How did that happen?”

“I was dreaming about her every night after I returned to La Jolla. When I came to see her in Davis, I carried her across the threshold. I asked her if she might consider marrying me in the near future. She said she’d been dreaming about me, too, and said she would marry me, not just consider it. So, we’re engaged!”

“That’s so romantic! Please invite John and me to the wedding, or elopement, or whatever you decide. I’m impressed. Lawyers are supposed to be so stuffy, and you certainly aren’t! You’re so competent, but you’re the opposite of all the clichés about lawyers.”

“I consider that the highest compliment you could give me! I’ll let you get back to John. I know you’re still newlyweds, too. Time is precious! Enjoy every moment.”

“Thank you. Now, relax. Call with any questions that pop up. Otherwise, let me know the vibes you get from your partner meeting on Thursday. Bye for now.”

“Good night, Karin! Hugs from afar!”

“To you, too.”

***

After a quick break, Kent called Talia. “Hi, honey.”

“Tell me, what’s happening?

“Karin offered the most wonderful proposal you could imagine. Even the Children’s Corner was cozy and inviting. I’ve had no questions at all! I’m going to review every page, then sleep on it. I’ll make my final version, integrated with her proposal, tomorrow night.”

“I wish I could be there to help, but I’ll be available if you need it, Love.”

“Thank you! Karin did give me one good piece of advice about how the proposal should look. She suggested I provide lots of white space so people will read it, pause, and think about what they’ve seen. She’s so wise!”

“And we’re so lucky that she’s provided her expertise to us.”

“We are. Talia, I don’t know how I’m going to make it through until Thursday. And then, Friday, until we’re together again. Do me a favor, if you see Athena, ask her if she’s spoken with her landlord about us. Find out whatever you can. Whether we’re doing this with my current firm or on our own, I think that knitting shop will make a fabulous law office.”

“I understand. And I won’t sound desperate. I think fate has decided that we should have your office in the former knitting shop. And, wow, Athena’s place! Won’t that be a great place to start our married life!”

“Yes, it will. Sweetheart, I’m worn out. I’ll be dreaming about you. Goodnight, honey.”

“And you, too, love.” She kissed him loudly over the phone and added, “Sweet dreams, Kent.”

***

Kent had his proposal totally in order, printed on a thick bond paper, and two flash drives to back him up. He was meeting Jonathan Penn at 2:00 p.m. in Penn’s office. He’d researched him and found out he was happily married with two kids, in his late thirties, and specialized in corporate law.

Penn’s secretary buzzed him, and announced that Kent had arrived. Penn opened his office door, shook his hand, and welcomed him, showing him to a seat at a small conference table.

“So, I hear you have a proposal about opening a new office. Tell me about your motivation to do that. As one of our brightest stars, with many new clients, we want to understand what you have in mind. By the way, you can call me ‘Jonathan.’”

“Thanks, Jonathan. I appreciate your offering me a chance to explain my motivation. Reviewing the potential for a new office in Davis, it seems like a very productive possibility for a college community that has few attorneys per capita. I am a graduate of UC Davis and UC Davis Law.

“I’ve been meeting people, friends of friends that want me to represent them, and I keep hearing of more. During my years in Davis, I really enjoyed the community and became friends with some of my, now, best clients. Opening an office in Davis seems like a logical step to increasing revenue. And, recently, my motivation increased. At a wedding in Davis recently, I met my fiancée. She works for the college. More motivation!”

Penn chuckled. “Yes, I understand that motivation. Otherwise long commutes. Go on, tell me about the packet in your hand.”

“The proposal I’ve developed shows the projected revenue, potential client base, the cost of setting up an office in a high-traffic downtown location, which is available to rent as of January, and an office design provided by a family friend who has excellent credentials and expertise.”

“Tell me what you’d project in terms of initial staffing.”

“A receptionist, a researcher/assistant, and one attorney to start. Another attorney within a year. I would manage the office, continue building my clientele, and train staff to develop their client base, interact with clients, and develop community partnerships and programs.”

He handed the proposal to Penn. “You’ll see that my proposal shows revenue projections, what the office would look like with conversion fees for our law office, furnishings, and technology. I would stay connected to our HR department for overseeing hiring procedures, after I interview each potential candidate. Costs in Davis are approximately twenty-five percent less than here. Our office rent should reflect that and utilities as well.”

Penn listened, while he flipped through the proposal.

“This office is very attractive! Maybe I should set up shop there, too,” Penn laughed, then smiled at Kent.

“I can introduce you to the designer/consultant if you’d like to update our office here. Her name is Karin Dominico and she’s the mother-in-law of my best friend from Davis. He’s also my best client. And his best friend is also my client, who recently sold his cyber security firm for nearly $30 billion. They are two of many clients I’m representing in Davis. I’ve been attending weddings lately, which are also generating new clients.”

“Well, I can understand why you’d like to move your office to Davis. How long would it take to get your office opened in Davis─while continuing to work with your current clients?”

“Since I can work from anywhere, I can certainly work with my current clients while I oversee the new office’s renovation, which is currently a knitting store. It is 2,655 sq. ft., and has the bones of a conference room and several offices already. Karin Dominico acts as coordinator for the tradespeople who will renovate our new office. She keeps everyone on schedule and budget, which is valuable. I’ve seen her work, and it’s stellar.

“So, to answer your question, I think we could be in operation in the Davis office, staffed and ready, within 2-3 months of signing the lease. The current shop is moving out over the holidays. We could sublet until May, then make sure our interests are covered to keep the new lease reasonable.”

“And when would you like to receive our answer, with questions if they arise, in order to make this happen?” Penn asked.

“Obviously, as soon as possible, to lock in the lease. So just before the New Year, if possible. And, I’d like to take a one-week honeymoon over the holidays. My friend is also a wedding officiant, so we can marry on almost no notice.”

Penn chuckled. “You certainly seem to have every item considered. I’m impressed. I think the other partners will be, too. We’ll consider what terms we’d require, but likely this will include a one-year trial for you to meet revenue targets. How does that sound?”

“Very fair. Bearing in mind that some of my projected clientele may not be billionaires, but people who need wills, help in court, and family law issues. We’ll see how the mix works out. I’d want to have my associates handle a broad range of clients, so no specialization to start.”

“Again, that sounds well thought-out. We haven’t spoken much, Kent, but I can understand why my partners speak so highly of your progress since you started with us. You have influential friends of means. And from a quick glance at your proposal, I see you’re not expecting outrageous sums to get this office off the ground. Ms. Dominico’s designs make it appealing and welcoming.”

“As they are meant to be, Jonathan. I told her we wanted to be welcoming, but not look like we’re new to law. We want to inspire confidence. And for the big-ticket clients, I will likely meet with them at their homes or offices.”

“You seem to have considered every aspect. I’m glad you made the distinction that you wanted to open an office in Davis, before you met your fiancée.”

“Yes, Davis feels like home. And Talia is the icing on the cake. If you don’t have any other questions, I’ll leave the proposal with you. I have a flash drive for you if you’d like to make additional copies.” He pulled the flash drive from his jacket’s breast pocket and handed it to Penn. “Thank you for considering my proposal and sharing your reaction.”

“I’m glad we’re speaking. Obviously, we’ll want to come take a look at the office.”

“Let me know when and we can work out the details. My client is contemplating taking a share in the charter airline they’ve been using. I’ll be looking over his paperwork for that soon. I can probably get you a friends and family rate.”

Penn laughed heartily. “You have certainly been busy, Kent. I’m going to vote in favor of your proposal.”

“Thank you, Jonathan! I look forward to greeting you in Davis. If the partners have questions, I can be available. When is their next meeting?”

“Next Wednesday. They may want to consider the proposal and get back to you after that, but I’ll copy the proposal and provide it to them tomorrow.”

“Thank you! I appreciate your support! If I can help you with any projects, I’d be happy to do that!”

“Congratulations on your engagement, Kent. Talia is a lucky lady. I’ll let you know after the meeting where things stand.”

“Again, thank you! I should be here next Wednesday. And about the engagement, I consider myself the luckiest man in the universe. Talia’s a gem.”

“Bye for now, Kent. Talk soon.”

Kent saluted him, smiled, and saw himself out.

***

Kent left the office and went to his car to make a private call to Talia            . She picked up.

He burst out with the news the second she answered, “Talia, it’s looking great!”

“I’m so glad, hon. Since I’m in the office, I can’t really talk much right now, but that’s fantastic. When will you know?”

“They have a partner’s meeting next Wednesday. Jonathan Penn said he was going to vote for the proposal! He was impressed.”

“Terrific. And when will you know?”

“I asked him for an answer before January 1st, so we could land the lease. He seems to think we can know before then. He really was positive the whole time I talked with him. I also told him I needed a week for the honeymoon. He was supportive about the whole idea!”

“Great, but I need to go now. I’m due at a meeting. Talk tonight?”

“Of course. Bye, love!”

After he hung up, he took a deep breath and called Karin.

She picked up on the first ring. “Hi, Kent. You have news?”

“Yes, thanks to you! Jonathan Penn was impressed with your designs. He said maybe he’d like to come to Davis because they looked so welcoming. I told him you could redesign their offices in La Jolla.”

“But is he in favor of the new office?”

“Yes! He said he’s going to vote for the proposal at next Wednesday’s partners’ meeting. I told him I needed an answer ASAP so we can land the lease for the office. So, by January 1st or sooner.”

“Terrific! Proud of you! I’ll expect to hear what happens at the meeting next week. If you hear they all voted for it, I’ll send out tentative feelers to the tradespeople who’ll do the work. As soon as you know for sure, I’ll book them.”

“Fabulous! You’re incredible. I also think he might be impressed enough with your work to provide some great word of mouth for you.”

“I always appreciate that. I’m glad you could see how I helped Will and Louisa first-hand. They really love the pieces I found for them. I don’t take credit for the ping pong table in the basement, but the wardrobe there is something I sourced.”

“Now that I know what you do and how wonderful your projects turn out, I’ll keep you in mind! By the way, do you know an exceptional moving company if I need one to move my apartment’s stuff to Davis?”

“I’ll think about it, and get back to you. Thanks for letting me know so quickly! Have a great evening!”

“Thank you, and regards to John. I’ll be heading to Davis on Friday evening at 6:30 on Gia’s shuttle, so if you’d like to discuss working with me, I could meet you both mid-afternoon in Temecula.”

“I’ll see if John can make it. Take care, Kent!”

“Enjoy your evening, Karin!”

***

Finished with the rush to prepare the proposal, Kent decided he needed to celebrate and collapse. In that order. He finished up his client’s projects that were on deadline and left the office at 5:30 p.m. An early first for him.

He stopped at the market and bought himself a dinner salad and a container of chocolate chunk ice cream, which he placed in the insulated container he kept in the car. He called in an order for his favorite take-out pizza, pepperoni with mushrooms and eggplant, and headed there to pick it up.

Fifteen minutes later when he reached the pizza place, he was happy because the pizza was piping hot. He hurried home and all the roads were fast! His luck was holding as he reached home in record time. After unloading his pizza and storing his salad and ice cream, he sat down and devoured two pieces of pizza. He hadn’t eaten lunch because he was so nervous. Now, he could relax and enjoy his good news!

He figured he’d pack a couple boxes to bring with him to Davis this weekend. When he looked at his furniture, he realized that unless Talia wanted him to bring his couch and bed, he didn’t feel like he wanted to ship them. He’d ask her.

So much to do in the next month, plus his clients’ work. He’d better find out whether he could get Gia out of her teaching contract early so he’d have good news for her this weekend.

Hunkering down in front of the TV, he decided to watch some mindless shows and relax over a bowl of chocolate chunk.

And then, two hours later, he woke up on the couch. His ice cream was melted, and he hadn’t put the pizza away. He took care of that and dragged himself to his bed. He hadn’t talked with Talia! At least to say goodnight.

He called her, leaving a voicemail since she didn’t answer.

“Hi, honey. Just wanted to check in and hear your voice. After all this excitement, I fell asleep in front of the TV. Guess I’m exhausted, but it was all worth it! Talk to you tomorrow! Sleep well, love! I’ll be dreaming of you!”

***

Just before his alarm was set to go off, he woke up. He knew he’d dreamed of Talia because he was smiling. By the time he reached his office, he’d decided on his priorities for the day.

Karin’s email was in his in-box. John and she were available to meet to discuss becoming his clients. She suggested 3:00 p.m. at their home and provided their address.  He answered “yes” right away. Then, he took a look at his calendar. He would spend the morning trying to get an answer on Gia’s resignation situation.

He decided to text Gia, since his calls to the union leadership and the school district attorney had been ignored.

KENT: Hi Gia, my efforts to reach someone at your district and the union have not been productive. Do you know your union rep personally? That would probably get us some results. Please share her/his name, email and anything else that’d be useful.

She responded a few minutes later.

GIA: Yes, Andrea Cooper. Just looked up her contacts and I’m including it. She and I have spoken a few times over the years. I think she’ll remember me.

KENT: Great, see you later. I’ll get you answers, if I can reach her. Thanks!

He called Ms. Cooper and, miracle of miracles, she answered!

“Hello, I’m Andrea Cooper. How may I help you?”

“Yes, Ms. Cooper, I’m Kent Rogers, an attorney with Flanagan, Gilbert, and Penn.”

“You’re not suing me, are you?”

Kent laughed, “No, not at all! Gia Haggerty, formerly Gia McFadden, is my client.  She was married last week and wants to find out what would happen if she resigned-with notice-earlier than the end of the school year. She was planning to commute on weekends to be with her new husband in Davis, but that’s expensive and exhausting. What can you tell me about early resignations with notice?”

“Kent, the district tries to discourage early termination of contracts. They’re afraid everyone will take advantage if someone gets off early. It’s hell to find subs for partial school years. How many years has she taught now and how old is she?”

“She’s taught at Temecula schools for twenty-five years now. She’ll be forty-eight on her next birthday this year.”

“So, she can’t collect retirement money since she’s younger than 55. But maybe we can find extenuating circumstances?”

“What would you consider those to be?”

“Illness of the spouse? A physical health problem of hers?”

“That doesn’t pertain here. They’re both healthy. They met at her son’s wedding and danced the whole evening.”

“Aside from the details, please send her my congratulations. But sad truth, I think they’ll probably penalize her, taking her per diem, then prorating the days she’ll miss when she leaves. She does have ten allowed personal days with no permission required, but they can’t be attached to a holiday.”

“I think she took off a day to get the marriage license, but I guess she could scatter some days to make three-day weekends and maybe give a month’s notice?”

“That might work. She’ll need to see what days she has left and figure out when she wants her last day to be.”

“But will she still qualify for her 25-year pension?”

“I’m not sure about that. Let me talk to our union attorney about Gia’s situation. Okay?”

“Yes, thank you. They want to know what their situation will be. I was at their wedding and they are so happy together. It feels sad, personally, to think that those 25 years of her hard work might be cancelled with no pension.”

“I know Gia has a stellar record and she always was there for the students. She is highly regarded. I’m sad, too, to think of her being penalized. I’ll get you an answer in the next couple of days.”

“Thank you, Ms. Cooper.”

“Call me Andrea. Should I reach you at this number?”

“Or you can text me basics in case I can’t pick up if I’m with a client. I’ll call you back.”

“I appreciate what you’re trying to find out so this becomes a total happy result for Gia. And what’s her husband’s name?”

“It’s David Haggerty.”

“I’ll call our attorney and get back to you when I get an answer for Gia.”

“She’ll be so grateful, Andrea. Bye for now.”

Kent hung up, and smiled. He had done everything he could to stack things in Gia’s favor. He needed to finish up some paperwork and get on the road to meet Karin and John.

***

Once he’d stopped at his apartment for the boxes he was bringing on the charter, he drove to Temecula. He spent the time wondering whether he’d told Talia his arrival time. Using his phone in hands-free mode, he called her.

“Hi, Kent.”

“Hi honey, real quick, I’ll be there about 8:00 p.m. tonight. Can’t wait!”

“Me, too. And I’ll be there. Chilly weather here now. Hope you dressed warmly. I’m aching to see you.”

“Feeling’s mutual. I’d better get back to driving. See you soon! Love you!”

“Ah, Kent! Just hearing your voice. . . Bye for now.”

***

Pulling up to Karin and John’s house, Kent thought about Louisa and her growing up in this neighborhood. He hoped for an equally great neighborhood in Davis where Talia and he could raise a family. Thinking positively now!

He hauled his attaché to the door and knocked. Karin answered and ushered him into their living room.

“So great seeing you, Kent. I’m glad the timing worked out. John’s in the kitchen getting us drinks and a snack. Hot chocolate sound good?”

“Great. I skipped lunch so I appreciate the welcome and the nourishment.”

“Well, we’re pretty much family now, aren’t we Kent?”

“It seems so, Karin.”

John arrived with a large tray of mugs of hot chocolate and a plate of donuts. “Hi Kent, good to see you again! Karin tells me you’re engaged to Talia! Louisa sure is great at matchmaking!” He laughed.

“Yes, your daughter is great at many things. Talia and I will always be grateful she invited us to Gia and David’s wedding and Thanksgiving.”

“We miss her. What news do you hear from her?

“Not much since last week, but I guess they’re exhausted after the wedding and hosting us all.”

“Why don’t we get down to why we asked you here? It’s time for us to work with you as our attorney. You’ve proven yourself to us with everything you’ve done for Louisa and Will. I need to redo my will and set up a trust for Karin, Louisa, and Randy. I need to make sure that the education trust fund Shannon set up for Louisa and Randy’s college is as effective as it should be. Are there other things I should be aware of with Karin and my recent marriage?” John said.

“And should I be moving my finances to work with John’s?” Karin asked. “I have been employed for years and have investments, bank accounts, and property.”

“Do you also want to set up a will, Karin?”

“Yes, I need to do that.”

“The best thing to do is to make a list. Sometimes when you do that, you remember things. As for the wills, decide who you want to be your beneficiaries, what percentage of your estate you want to allocate to them, and who should be your executor. At this point, I’d suggest you choose each other. A trust is another level beyond a will. Some versions of a trust protect your privacy and tax situation. Let’s hold off on trusts for now. I’ll send you an email with a link to explore more.”

“I have a will that I executed before Louisa and Will were married. I named them as Randy’s guardians. Pretty soon, he won’t need a guardian. I would like to set up a new will to include Karin. So that’s for real. We can go deeper with a trust after we start with that,” John said.

“And I have a very old will, but it’s time to push that aside and make a new one with John as executor and my largest beneficiary. I’d like to include Randy and Louisa in mine, too. They matter to me and I love them both,” Karin said.

“Ah, Karin, that’s lovely. I’m so glad you feel that way about them. Let’s hope we don’t need to think about it for a very long time─after we get our wills set up,” John said.

“I think you’re both on the right track. It is one of the hardest things to do from my experience with helping people prepare their wills─quantifying who and how much.”

“I’m pleased we’re working with you, Kent. I don’t think we’ll regret whatever we decide with you overseeing our legal situation. I figure your fees will be standard and you’ll be fair. So far, I see you’re aware of human beings. That’s a plus. Most lawyers I’ve met quote legalese and don’t seem to care who we are as people.” John nodded at Kent.

“I’m quite aware of people and their situation. In your case, I feel like I’ve just expanded my family. Since I met Louisa this summer, she’s been the intuitive contact who’s made my life wonderful! She invited me to the Thanksgiving dinner, and Gia and David’s wedding. Talia and I’ve fallen in love and are planning to marry soon. I hope you can join us, whenever we figure out where and when we’ll hold the ceremony. And Will is the brother I never had. Louisa and Will welcomed me as a friend and gave me a “care” package.”

“Yes, I’ve seen Will’s kindness often,” John said.

“Well, looking at the time, I think we’d better let you get to your charter flight. I know how eager you are to see Talia,” Karin said.

“Thank you both for your hospitality. I’ll send you our official welcoming package from Flanagan, Gilbert, and Penn. It looks like I’ll probably be opening an office for them in Davis. I should know in the next two weeks.”

“Congratulations, Kent!” John shook his hand and Karin hugged him.

He headed to the door.

Karin called out, “Safe travels, Kent. Give my regards, to Talia, Louisa, and Will.”
